Professional Photography

Finding and capturing memorable images requires a diverse array of attributes. Problems must be solved quickly and creatively, while maintaining focus and vision. The Professional Photography Program at Brooks Institute is designed to teach students the skills and talents required for a rewarding professional photographic career. From day one hands-on instruction and practice provide the technical expertise which forms the foundation of future work. Through concentrated experience in the studio, students can learn how to manipulate and control lighting and exposures, compose people and still life compositions and produce images on a variety of film and digital formats. On location assignments, an important part of many courses at Brooks, students can learn how to handle the complex problems involved in merging equipment, models, and environment into an effective and compelling photograph. Lab assignments teach students to modify photographic and digital processes to complete the transformation of creative idea to final photograph. Advanced level courses are designed to take the students work to a new level as they focus on specific areas of specialization.
The Bachelor of Arts Degree can be completed in as little as three years. This year round program is comprised of six eight-week terms, during which a student usually takes one core photography class paired with one general education course.

“The elements of a subject that speak to us are often scattered and can't be captured in one photo; we don't have the right to force them together, and to stage them would be cheating... which brings us to the need for photojournalism.” - Henri Cartier-Bresson
There are stories to be told everywhere, from the altiplano of South America to around the corner back home. In a 24 hour news cycle, audiences want the story and want it now, with pictures from the frontlines. The world of communication has become a world where audiences want storytelling brought to them in new ways. The photographer storyteller with multiple skills has the best chance of delivering the story to the audience they want to reach. That is why Brooks Institute has created this non-traditional program, Visual Journalism. The photojournalist of yesterday must today be cross-trained in still cameras, computers, and digital video cameras. That way the photographer can deliver a story or project to the traditional print media, to the Web and to the multi-cable environment.

Visual Communication

You are bombarded with images. Visual Communication is everywhere… from the graphics on your favorite cereal box to the designs on your snowboard, or the logo on your favorite pair of sneakers. It is a major part of this website, your textbooks, newspapers and the brochures you receive in the mail. Today, Visual Communication consists of traditional careers in Graphic Design and the newer career paths in the areas often referred to as New Media. Bringing together images and text to move, to sell, to identify, to empower, visual communication is as old as cave paintings and as new as tomorrow.
An accelerated program, the Bachelor of Arts Degree can be completed in as little as three years. This year round program is comprised of six eight-week terms, during which a student usually takes one core design class paired with one general education course.
