Public Administration - Job Outlook

Employment opportunities for those in public administration is expected to grow at about the same rate as other occupations through the year 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Growth will come from the continued need for municipal governments to provide services such as fire protection, criminal justices systems, public works, libraries, schools, public health, transportation, housing and development due to an expanding population.

High level management positions are limited, so competition for them should be keen. Those with graduate degrees from an accredited institution, strongest business skills and work experience will be well-positioned to take advantage of the most coveted jobs. The private sector is increasingly employing people familiar with public administration as regulation becomes more complex. For example, an urban planner may be employed by a private firm to improve security or environmental standards for a building.

Public administrator salaries depend on the geography and function of the administrator and the government agency they work for. The median income for administrative services managers was $60,290 in May 2004, according to The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Statistics. Ninety percent of administrators earned between $31,120 and $110,270. Working for the federal government will earn you about $9,000 more than the median on average, while working for a state government will earn you about $5,000 less.
