Industrial Engineering Careers

Industrial engineers design and create the goods, services and systems that society needs or that companies use.  No matter what the product (chemical, airplane, toy or computer system) the engineering process can be described as follows:
determine what functions the product needs to perform
    design a product
    test the components
    integrate the components
evaluate the product for cost, effectiveness, reliability and safety.

Other responsibilities an industrial engineer may have include estimation of project costs and time and installation, maintenance, production and testing of products.

Because many of the responsibilities of an industrial engineer are related to business management, many engineers work their way up to management positions.  Another job available to an industrial engineer is as a salesperson.  Someone who is an industrial engineer that understands a product or service is in an excellent position to sell that product.  These positions usually require a Bachelor’s or Master’s of Science in Engineering.

However, some entry level positions can be had without years of education.  Some of the entry level positions include:

  • Cable Installer
  • Electronic Production Technician
  • Line Installer and Repairer
  • Telecommunications Equipment Installer and Repairer

Some of the companies hiring industrial engineers include IBM, Company, Rockwell Automation, Lucasfilm, Raytheon, and Evergreen Solar.
