You can take up a 2- or 4-year college degree program in culinary arts or you could go in for formal training through an independent cooking school or a professional culinary institute. Formal programs that offer training leading to a certificate or a degree are geared more to train chefs for fine-dining or upscale restaurants. They offer a wide range of training options and specialties, such as advanced cooking techniques, cooking for banquets or parties, training in international cuisines, etc.
- Inquire about the various courses that are offered
Although the curriculum may vary depending upon the course you take up, a
well-rounded culinary arts degree program generally includes includes courses in nutrition, menu planning, portion control, purchasing and inventory methods, proper food storage procedures, and use of leftover food to minimize waste.
