Forks, ergonomic chairs, refrigerators, televisions, computer circuit boards, cars, buildings, city sewer systems… everywhere you look, there are objects that were designed by someone who was probably sitting in front of a computer.  You can be that someone.  You can have a challenging career as a computer-aided designer.

The designer determines what the client needs, what function the design will perform, how users and customers will like it, and how to best produce the product – thus combining art, business and engineering to provide us with the products used in our everyday personal and work lives.  Designers meet with clients, potential users and suppliers and research markets and complimentary and competing products.  Then designers sketch their ideas, more often than not with a computer.  Computer-aided design has added flexibility and efficiency to the design process.  Then a model or prototype is made and presented to the client for comments and the necessary changes are made.  Designers also may be involved in usability testing and marketing.

New entrants into field will start off as a graphics designer, layout designer, a flash designer, user-interface designer or other type of designer.  With more experience designers manage a team as a chief designer or design department head, teach in universities or computer-aided design schools, or open their own design firm.  Types of companies that hire computer aided designers include everything from aerospace firms to fashion design to software applications.

Examples well known companies you may work for include:
Aerospace:  Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, Northrup Grumman, Rocketdyne
Fashion Design: Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, Donna Karan, American Eagle, Coach, Gucci
